Movement and Migration

Arranged by themes of ‘Identity’, ‘Interiors’, ‘Nature’ and more, our newly refurbished galleries bring together our much-loved and iconic artworks alongside brand-new acquisitions – many of which are now displayed for the very first time. Explore galleries 1–5 and discover the surprising connections between historic, modern and contemporary paintings.

Discover the diverse journeys of migrants across time and their search for freedom and opportunity. Some moved by choice, while others fled conflict, discrimination, or colonial rule. Wherever they went, migrants brought along the artistic traditions and ideas of their homelands, transforming the cultures they joined. Explore artists such as David Bomberg, Alan Beeton, Frank Auerbach and Amedeo Modigliani.
