Gallery 3 is the showcase picture gallery within the Founder’s building and with its high, complex plasterwork ceiling, including a cast of the Parthenon Frieze, it is a work of art in itself.
With a country house feel, coins and medals, manuscripts, furniture, ceramics and sculpture are displayed alongside British portraiture from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Here you can see works by Peter Lely, Anthony Van Dyck, William Hogarth, Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds and a portrait of the Founder Viscount Fitzwilliam by Joseph Wright of Derby.
