As the principal museum of the University of Cambridge and the largest cultural venue in the region, The Fitzwilliam Museum acts as a crucial bridge between the University, the City and the rest of the world, and has an international reputation for extraordinary research, world class exhibitions, award-winning public programmes and significant collections spanning many cultures and centuries. The Hamilton Kerr Institute (HKI) is one of the world's leading centres for teaching and research in conservation and heritage science.

In 2022-2024, the University of Cambridge Museums and collections (UCM) will use an interdisciplinary public programme, including a landmark exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum, to explore and address the legacies of empire and enslavement. The exhibition will focus on the links between Cambridge, Cambridgeshire and Atlantic slavery. It will present a visual and material history of the enslavement of Black Africans, of the profits made by European traders and the owners of plantations, of resistance by the enslaved and their allies, and of the enduring legacies of these events and people.

The Project Curator will work closely with the Exhibition's Lead Curators on collections and bibliographic research, concept development, presentation, and interpretation. They will work as part of the Exhibitions and Displays team to help manage delivery following Fitzwilliam Museum processes and agreed timelines.

We are seeking someone with experience of working on a gallery display or exhibition, within a museum or other relevant institution, and with expertise relating to the visual and material culture, or the history of, enslavement, empire, resistance and/or their enduring legacies.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 January 2024 in the first instance.
