"Zoë Ellison introduced me to the studio potters Ian Auld and Gillian Lowndes. Ian Auld had travelled very widely, to India, Turkey and Iran, and in 1970, he and Gillian and their son spent a year travelling around Nigeria, collecting art. On their return, they started selling these pieces in their shop in Camden Passage, North London. This was one of the few places that you could see contemporary African art in London at that time, and it was my first experience of Nigerian art, which I was later to see first-hand."
